Teddy Honors his Hero, Abraham Lincoln!
This striking signed photograph bears a flawless signature from the 26th President of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt. One of our favorite subjects and certainly one of the most collected, Roosevelt scripted this full-name autograph during the final weeks of his presidency. Dated in his own hand, “Jan 30th, 1909,” and inscribed “with the regards of”, the signed photograph is a true piece of American history!

The engraved photo is atypically oversized, measuring approximately 7in x 10in (visible). Most Roosevelt signed photos we find in the market are much smaller, typically 5in x 7in or less, and they almost always feature an unwanted personalized notation to the original recipient, which distracts the overall display and decreases the collector value.

Beyond its aesthetic and rarity, the signed and dated photo carries major historical resonance. On January 30, 1909, President Roosevelt gave formal approval to the United States Mint to place Abraham Lincoln’s likeness on a U.S. coin - the first time an American President would appear on circulating coinage. It was a fitting tribute from one president to another. It is well-documented that Roosevelt revered Lincoln. In fact, he was his hero, and a guiding light in statesmanship and moral leadership.

The connection between Teddy and Lincoln spanned the course of Roosevelt’s entire life. As a seven year old boy, Roosevelt watched from the window of the Roosevelt Mansion to witness Lincoln’s national funeral procession pass through the streets of New York City. Decades later, while President, Roosevelt wore a ring containing a strand of Lincoln’s hair as a reminder of the necessary sacrifices a president must make. He would often invoke Lincoln’s legacy in his writings and speeches, and made multiple pilgrimages to Springfield and Hodgenville to pay homage. In his own words, Roosevelt declared, “I do not have to tell you that my great hero is Abraham Lincoln”.

This standout historical piece celebrates the life and legacy of Roosevelt, and honors the enduring impact of Abraham Lincoln’s influence on one of America’s most dynamic leaders!
