The Pride of the Yankees!
We are proud to offer a rare and powerful piece of baseball and American history—an original, crystal-clear photograph of Lou Gehrig, captured on July 4, 1939, during his legendary farewell at Yankee Stadium.
That day, known as Lou Gehrig Appreciation Day, marked one of the most emotional moments in sports. As Gehrig stood alone at home plate, addressing a crowd of over 60,000 fans, he delivered the now-immortal words: “Today, I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth.” Battling the early stages of ALS, his courage and grace resonated far beyond the game of baseball.
This iconic image - taken from the original negative - perfectly captures that moment. Gehrig, flanked by his teammates in the background, stands in quiet dignity, microphone before him. The photograph has since become one of the most enduring images in sports and American cultural memory… a true symbol of strength.
The photo itself is in flawless, mint condition - nothing more needs to be said. It is quite large for its era, measuring 8x10 inches. The image is crystal clear and beautifully captures the legendary Yankee captain, known as the Iron Horse.
What makes this rendering especially powerful is the solemn, pensive expression on his face as he awaits the famous speech he's about to deliver. This is history, through and through.
The photo has been designated an original Type 2 by PSA, meaning it was developed from the original negative shortly after the image was taken - though not within the initial two-year window. A Type 1 photograph , by comparison, is a first-generation photo developed from the original negative within two years of the photo being taken. Type 1’s are extremely scarce (often one-of-a-kind) and can command astronomical prices. This particular image designated Type 1 could easily command over $20,000 at auction.
Accordingly, we believe this more affordable Type 2 example remains significantly undervalued and presents collectors with a strong opportunity to own a vintage, authentic piece that still maintains its rarity and desirability. More importantly for collectors, it is a piece that can be proudly displayed and enjoyed - by baseball lovers, collectors, or anyone who appreciates the legacy of the game.
Simply a special piece of baseball and social history, and one we highly recommend. It comes encapsulated by PSA and, of course, can be removed and framed for that perfect spot on your wall—or simply displayed on your favorite shelf to be admired daily.
Authenticated and encapsulated by PSA.
