An extraordinary piece of early baseball history, offered here is a rare Johnny Evers signed First Day Cover, postmarked in 1946 — the very year Evers was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame! One of the most celebrated second basemen of baseball’s Deadball Era, Evers has signed the front of the envelope in beautiful black ink. Exceptionally well-preserved nearly 80 years later, the autograph has earned an outstanding Mint 9 grade from PSA/DNA.

A First Day Cover — commonly referred to as an FDC — is an envelope bearing a newly issued postage stamp and officially postmarked on the stamp’s first day of release. Long before the modern autograph hobby took shape, collectors used commemorative covers as an ideal canvas for obtaining signatures from important figures, pairing the autograph with a stamp, date or historical event connected to its subject. Signed FDCs became a fascinating niche within autograph collecting, and surviving examples from baseball’s earliest Hall of Famers remain especially desirable.

The timing of this particular cover makes it especially fitting. Evers was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 1946, alongside his legendary Chicago Cubs teammates Joe Tinker and Frank Chance. Together, the trio formed baseball’s most famous double-play combination, forever immortalized as “Tinker to Evers to Chance.” This First Day Cover was postmarked during that same historic year, creating a wonderful period connection to Evers’ election to Cooperstown.

Nicknamed “The Crab” for his famously fiery style of play, Evers was a cornerstone of the great Cubs teams that captured four National League pennants and back-to-back World Series championships in 1907 and 1908. His career extended well beyond Chicago, highlighted by a 1914 season in which he captained the “Miracle Braves” to an improbable World Series championship and was named the National League’s Most Valuable Player. More than a century later, Evers remains one of the most recognizable names from baseball’s formative years, with surviving signatures presenting an increasingly difficult opportunity for early Hall of Fame collectors.
