1882 Standard Oil Trust Stock Certificate, signed by John D. Rockefeller as President and Henry Flagler as Secretary
This original stock certificate represents 200 shares at $100 each (equaling $20,000) - adjusted for inflation, that's over $600k today! The certificate (no. 78) is made out to J.A. Bostwick, founding member and Secretary-Treasurer of Standard Oil!
John D. Rockefeller and Henry Flagler joined forces to found an oil refining company in Cleveland in 1865. This company would eventually become Standard Oil Company in 1870 and, in 1882, Standard Oil Company and its affiliates combined to form Standard Oil Trust. The present certificate is, therefore, an early iteration of the company’s stock. In 1885 the company officially relocated its headquarters to New York City, where it flourished until 1911, when it was broken up in accordance with President Theodore Roosevelt's newly-passed antitrust laws.
