The Flying Dutchman Signed Check
Dated New Year's Eve, 1918!
Honus Wagner is one of the greatest players of all-time and one of the most coveted signatures in the entire hobby. It was of no surprise when he was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1936 as one of the five original members... he is that important to our National Pastime!
Offered here is a rare full-name signed check from The Flying Dutchman dated on December 31st 1918, just one year after he retired as a player. For whatever reason, Wagner signed checks are particularly scarce compared to other versions of the shortstop's signature, especially one from the 1910's with a full name autograph!
Of course, we had to pair the signature with an oversized print of Wagner's iconic 1909 T-206 Rookie Card - the most valuable sports card in the world! The mystique of this legendary card derives from its pure rarity. When tobacco companies issued baseball cards in cigarette packs at the turn of the century, everyone wanted to get their hands on the Wagner rookie because he was the best player of his day. As the story goes, Wagner did not want to promote tobacco products to young kids, so he had his card pulled from production. This resulted in a very limited supply, and today there are only a handful of authentic cards known to exist, with each valued at well over a million dollars!
However, true baseball enthusiasts know the real story - that Wagner pulled the card from production simply because he was not compensated by the tobacco companies for using his image and likeness. With that said, we naturally had to pair this rare signed check, made to cash, with the oversized print of the infamous rookie card!
