1944 D-Day WWII U.S. Troops & Nazi Prisoners, Original Photograph, PSA Type I

This powerful original Type I photograph, taken during the historic Normandy landings of June 1944, captures a rare and sobering scene from D-Day. Authenticated by PSA/DNA, the image depicts U.S. Allied troops aboard a U.S. Navy 'Dukw Boat' returning to England with wounded soldiers and captured Nazi prisoners.

The composition is both haunting and heroic—two young American soldiers (paratroopers) stand above the wounded prisoners, their faces marked by exhaustion and revelation. The raw emotion—or lack thereof—in the expressions of both sides tells the story of sacrifice and survival on one of history’s most consequential days.

The reverse of the photo bears the original Official U.S. Navy Photograph stamping and caption, confirming its authenticity and historical origin. It was later housed in the renowned Brown Brothers Archive, whose archival markings also appear on the reverse. The original caption reads:

“WOUNDED NAZIS RUSHED WITH ALLIED CASUALTIES TO HOSPITALS – Joined in the common bond of suffering, wounded Nazi prisoners of war lie side-by-side with Allied casualties on the bottom of an LCVP (Landing Craft Vehicle, Personnel) speeding back to England from the French coasts. American paratroopers are included among the casualties.

”Measuring 8" x 10", this PSA-certified photograph retains extraordinary clarity and depth, offering a vivid window into the harrowing aftermath of the D-Day invasion.

Historical Note: The LCVP, also known as a "Dukw Boat" or “Higgins Boat,” played a critical role in the Allied invasion of Normandy. Designed to carry troops and vehicles directly onto enemy beaches, these amphibious craft became an essential tool of victory—bridging sea and land in the defining moments of World War II.
