Harvey Haddix Signed and Inscribed "100 Years of Baseball" Cachet
This exceptional piece of baseball history features the legendary Harvey Haddix’s bold signature and inscription on a postmarked 1969 "100 Years of Baseball" first day cover. Issued in Cincinnati, Ohio, the envelope commemorates a century of the national pastime. Haddix has inscribed it with a striking black India ink fountain pen, "12 Perfect Innings Pitched, May 26, 1959, Pittsburgh 0 Milwaukee 1". The cachet, in Mint Condition, hails from the famed Ohio Baseball Hall of Fame Collection and was signed a full decade after his unforgettable performance.
On May 26, 1959, Harvey Haddix of the Pittsburgh Pirates pitched one of the most remarkable performances in baseball history, retiring 27 batters in a row over 12 innings—Perfectly. However, in the 13th inning, with the game still tied 0-0, Haddix walked the leadoff hitter, and a subsequent error led to a run scoring, giving the Milwaukee Braves a 1-0 victory. Unfortunately for Haddix his performance is not considered a true perfect game because it ended with a loss and was marred by the unearned run in the 13th. The official definition of a "perfect game" requires the pitcher to face 27 batters and retire them all without any reaching base.
Haddix, a three-time Gold Glove winner, two-time World Champion (1960, 1979), and three-time All-Star, passed away in 1994 at the age of 68. He remains a player highly sought after by advanced collectors due to his impressive career and legacy. Pair this signed cachet with a single-signed ball, and you have a terrific Pirates piece of true history, perfect for any serious collection.
