The Birth of a Legend: Signed Sam Cooke Photo from 1958
“A Change is Gonna Come” – A Signature from the Early Days of Soul.

Sam Cooke (1931-1964) was a groundbreaking American singer, songwriter, and pioneer of soul music. Initially a gospel singer, he transitioned to pop and R&B in the late 1950s, achieving massive success with hits like "You Send Me" and "A Change Is Gonna Come." Cooke's smooth voice and innovative blend of gospel, pop, and rhythm & blues revolutionized music. He was also a vocal advocate for civil rights, using his platform to speak out against racial inequality. Cooke's life was tragically cut short when he was shot and killed on December 11, 1964, at the age of 33, but his music and influence continue to resonate today.

Locating anything written or signed by the legendary Sam Cooke is a rare and exciting find. With a career that was tragically cut short, Cooke's stardom, though brief, left an indelible mark on the music world. His legacy as one of the true greats of modern music lives on through his timeless contributions to soul, pop, and gospel. A signed piece from Cooke is a coveted treasure for any serious music collector, regardless of genre. This particular example is especially meaningful—it’s not just a signature, but a hand-signed photo of the man himself! We couldn't wait to receive this incredible find, having purchased it from a dealer who specializes in great autographs of music icons. It’s our very first example of the great singer, and it is, without a doubt, a special one

This black-and-white photo captures Sam Cooke in his prime—handsome, smiling and charming indeed. The autograph is written in bold blue fountain pen, strong and clear, perfectly situated on the image. The signature contrasts beautifully against the white background, and not affecting of the photo itself, which often compromises the image. This is a prime example that stands out not only for its visual appeal but also for its historical significance.

Accompanied by a full letter of authenticity from JSA, which not only authenticates the style but also confirms the year as 1958 (printed on the reverse of the photo as well), this piece provides a fascinating glimpse into Cooke's early days in the business—his 'rookie' style, if you will. It's a truly remarkable find, one that no serious collector should overlook. The photo is professionally framed and double-matted in archival, UV-protected materials, ensuring it will remain a stunning display for years to come.

Simply put, it's an exceptional piece of music memorabilia.
