The Great Bambino!
Offered here is one of the most compelling Babe Ruth pieces we’ve ever had in our collection - an exceptional oversized portrait signed by the Sultan of Swat himself! The photograph is an M114 Premium issued by Baseball Magazine, presenting an intimate close-up of the greatest ballplayer to ever live. The original image, captured by noted baseball photographer Charles M. Conlon, reflects the work of one of the most renowned and collected photographers across all sports. The composition draws the viewer in, conveying Ruth’s unmistakable presence with remarkable intensity.
Ruth’s autograph, inscribed “Sincerely,” appears in bold black fountain pen in the lower left corner of the image, penned cleanly against the white of his New York Yankees uniform. The placement allows for excellent clarity and strong contrast, resulting in an unobstructed presentation.
Based on the style and penmanship of the signature, we can confidently attribute this autograph to circa 1927 - the most significant season of Ruth’s career and one of the most celebrated in Major League Baseball history. That year, Ruth established the single-season home run record with 60, while anchoring the famed “Murderers’ Row” lineup alongside Lou Gehrig en route to a World Series Title.
Baseball Magazine premiums were issued from the 1910s through the 1950s, with this example aligning to the mid-to-late 1920s. The signature here is notably controlled and concisely proportionate, consistent with Ruth’s tighter style from mid-late 1920’s. In contrast, later-career and post-retirement from the 1930s and 1940s tend to be much larger and more expressive. A period example such as this - dating to the height of Ruth’s career - holds particular historical significance and rarity to astute collectors.
The photograph measures slightly over 9 x 7 inches and presents beautifully, offering both visual strength and historical significance.
