The Magical World of Disney!
Celebrate the magic of early Disney with this extraordinary original 1939 Walt Disney Productions poster featuring Minnie Mouse directing visitors to “Rest Rooms – Like Guest Rooms.” Measuring an impressive 43” x 56” (framed), this large-format display piece embodies the height of Disney’s groundbreaking merchandising expansion of the 1930s.
The poster showcases a charming and vibrant image of Minnie Mouse, dressed in an apron and holding a duster—an endearing and era-perfect symbol of hospitality and cleanliness. It retains all the hallmarks of an authentic period Disney production, including the “© 1939 Walt Disney Productions” copyright line, “Litho in U.S.A.”, and Disney’s iconic facsimile signature.
Remarkably, this piece was originally obtained directly from the New York office of Kay Kamen, one of the most influential figures in entertainment history. Beginning in 1932, Kamen served as Disney’s exclusive merchandising agent and was instrumental in transforming Disney from a successful animation studio into a global consumer brand. A visionary and marketing genius, Kamen built an unprecedented licensing empire around Mickey and Minnie Mouse, pioneering the modern character-merchandising model that continues to define the industry today. Operating from Midtown Manhattan near Rockefeller Center, he oversaw thousands of Disney products and promotional materials distributed to retailers and commercial venues nationwide.
It is only fitting that a piece of this scale and creativity would emerge from Kamen’s orbit. With its bold format, colorful animation, and welcoming message, this poster was almost certainly designed for public display within that New York merchandising environment - most convincingly hung in Kamen’s offices, the Disney merchandising showroom, or within Rockefeller Center itself, where Disney promotional materials were actively showcased. The slogan “Rest Rooms – Like Guest Rooms” aligns with a well-documented late-1930s and 1940s cleanliness campaign used in corporate advertising, including by Standard Oil’s successor companies, closely tied to the Rockefeller family - further reinforcing its connection to this prominent commercial setting. (we've provided scans of Standard Oil newspaper ads featuring the same exact slogan)
Original Disney promotional signage of this nature was produced for temporary use and seldom preserved, making surviving examples exceptionally scarce. No other examples of this specific poster are currently documented, placing it among the rarest and most visually striking artifacts from the formative years of Disney merchandising—and from the remarkable era in which Kay Kamen helped shape Disney into the global cultural phenomenon it remains today.
