Mel Ott Signed Album Page, Bold. “Melvin” Full Name Autograph. PSA and JSA
An exceptionally large and boldly signed Mel Ott autograph, unusually expansive in size, presented on a vintage autograph album sheet measuring 4 x 5.5 inches. This example features Ott’s scarcer full-name signature, “Melvin,” rather than his more common “Mel.” Measuring nearly 4 inches across in vintage fountain pen, it is a commanding presence, far larger than most Ott autographs encountered.
Encapsulated and graded PSA NM-MT 8, this example is conservatively graded, but the signature itself is remarkably clean, sharp, and visually striking. In our opinion, it is fully worthy of a Mint grade, which is why we specifically pursued it from a longtime collector. Most Mel Ott autographs offered in the marketplace are modest in size, often cut from multi-signed sheets. But a full-name, oversized album page example such as this is extremely elusive.
Mel Ott, an original member of the 500 Home Run Club (joining the club alongside only Babe Ruth and Jimmie Foxx at the time), remains one of the most revered figures in New York Giants history. He played his entire Major League career with the New York Giants from 1926 to 1947, compiling legendary career statistics:
- Home Runs: 511
- RBIs: 1,860
- Hits: 2,876
- Batting Average: .304
- All-Star Appearances: 12
- NL Home Run Titles: 6 (tied for the league lead 6 times)
Ott’s career was tragically cut short when he died in a car accident at just 49 years old in 1958, the victim of a drunken driver. This limited the window of opportunity for collectors to obtain his autograph, long before the era of formal signings, memorabilia shows, or private signings. Full-name examples are therefore exceedingly scarce and highly desirable.
This bold, visually impressive signature captures not only the Hall of Fame caliber of Ott as a player but also the rarity and historical significance of his autograph. A must-have for serious collectors of vintage baseball autographs and original members of the 500 Home Run Club.
PSA Encapsulated. Also comes with a full JSA letter of authenticity.
