Lou Gehrig Signed and Fully Handwritten Letter. PSA Mint 9!
We’ve discovered another hidden treasure from an old collection, one that’s been tucked away for over two decades and hasn’t been seen in the hobby during that time. As we all know, Gehrig handwritten letters are incredibly rare and seldom surface in the market. This one not only features terrific content but the signature is also graded Mint 9 by PSA/DNA. It’s truly an extraordinary piece, and we are proud to offer it for sale.
Rare Personal Advice to a Young Fan
In the early 1900s, young baseball fans often wrote letters to their heroes, hoping for a response. While replies were uncommon, this exceptional piece showcases a personal, handwritten response from the legendary Lou Gehrig himself. In response to a young player’s letter seeking advice on batting approaches, Gehrig wrote, “Adapt yourself to your own particular style, and the one which suits you the best.”
Exceptional Yankee Great Signed Display
All the writing exhibits exquisite penmanship, with beautiful cursive that has truly been lost to the ages. In addition, this Yankee great has provided an unusually large, wonderful example of his signature. Based on our experience, we believe the style of the signature dates it to the late 1920s to early 1930s period. As the 1930s progressed, his autograph typically became smaller. Of course, by late 1938, his signature began to show signs of his illness, and by mid-1939, he was virtually unable to sign at all. In any case, this example is unquestionably one of the finest you’ll find—truly that impressive.
The scarcity of his signature alone cannot be denied; even in his prime as the "Iron Man," he was often reluctant and even reticent to sign—perhaps even "bashful." He certainly didn't possess the effusive personality of Babe Ruth. Tragically, he passed away too young—in 1941, at just 37 years old. It would not be an overstatement to say that Ruth autographs are ten times as plentiful as Gehrig’s. In today’s market, finding a nice example of Gehrig’s signature alone is no easy task—they simply don’t surface very often.
It follows that a personal handwritten letter of advice to a young baseball fan (and player), especially in the top condition of this one, is virtually unattainable. We believe this example is the Best of the Best and will always be something any serious collector—Yankee or not—would want to hold in their collection. Given the rapid rise in value of premium sports pieces and baseball cards, this mint personal letter remains underpriced and often overlooked in the marketplace. In short, this is a great piece, and in our opinion that will continue to appreciate and outpace inflation.
A rare and heartfelt glimpse into the kindness and wisdom of one of baseball’s greatest players, it is accompanied with the letter of authenticity Graded Mint 9 by PSA/DNA.
