The original Shot Sage Blue Marilyn went on to become one of the most iconic images of the 20th century. After changing hands among prominent collectors for decades, it ultimately sold at Christie’s in 2022 for an astonishing $195 million. That is not a typographical error—it realized nearly $200 million, cementing its place as one of the most valuable artworks ever sold.
This poster is one of a small handful produced to promote that historic 1971 Tate exhibition. Warhol has boldly autographed this example, which remains in pristine, mint condition, entirely free of flaws. His signature spans a striking 7½ inches across the lower white portion of the poster, providing a perfect visual contrast. The poster itself measures 19¾ x 29¾ inches.
The image of Marilyn featured here is one of the most recognizable and culturally enduring portraits in modern art. Warhol’s depiction—vivid, evocative, color-rich, and endlessly reproduced—has played a defining role in shaping Marilyn Monroe’s lasting public image and stands as a cornerstone of the Pop Art aesthetic. It is nothing short of an icon of American visual culture, and this signed exhibition poster stands as a rare and extraordinary relic from the moment when that image first shook the art world.
