An exceptional Walter Johnson signed letter from his playing days, dated August 24, 1927. Written on his personal letterhead measuring 10" x 7.25" and accompanied by the original mailing envelope, postmarked Cleveland, Ohio the same day.
The highlight is Johnson’s magnificent autograph — a large, flowing signature in bold black fountain-pen ink, graded GEM MINT 10 by PSA/DNA, their highest possible grade. Signatures of the legendary “Big Train” with this level of strength and eye appeal are extremely difficult to find. As seasoned collectors recognize, Walter Johnson’s autographs typically appear light because he wrote with notably soft pen pressure, (similar to Lou Gehrig.) Additionally, acquiring a PSA Gem Mint 10 for any vintage player, particularly an original 1936 Hall of Fame charter member, is a feat in itself.
Adding a fascinating personal element, several black ink fingerprints appear on the reverse — likely the result of the often-messy process of using and refilling fountain pens, and quite possibly (and probably) left by Johnson himself.
Johnson spent his entire 21-year career with the Washington Senators (1907–1927), compiling an astonishing 417 wins, 3,508 strikeouts, and a 2.17 ERA. A 1924 AL MVP and charter member of the Baseball Hall of Fame, he remains one of the most dominant pitchers the game has ever seen.
Because Johnson passed away in 1946, decades before autograph shows and mass signings existed, authentic signatures are inherently scarce — particularly examples displaying such a bold GEM MINT autograph.
With its PSA/DNA GEM MINT 10 signature, likely fingerprints, personal stationery, and matching envelope, all from his "playing days" this is a centerpiece-quality Walter Johnson artifact and an outstanding addition to any serious Hall of Fame autograph collection.
Comes with a full Letter of Authenticity from PSA.
