Remarkable Handwritten Letter from Connie Mack to a Rising Major Leaguer, Featuring Mention of John Montgomery Ward
This rare handwritten letter, during spring training 1950 and dated March 26th, by legendary baseball figure Connie Mack (1862-1956) offers a unique glimpse into the personal connection he continually developed with budding talent. Addressed to a young player on the cusp of a professional career, Mack’s words are as insightful as they are encouraging, revealing his deep understanding of the game and its players. How impressed must this young player have been when the manager of the Philadelphia Athletics—and 1937 Hall of Fame inductee —took the time to write back with such encouragement? Notably, the letter includes a fascinating reference to Hall of Famer John Montgomery Ward, further enriching its historical significance.
In his own hand, Mack advises the player to "write Arthur Ehlers"—then the farm system director for the Athletics and later their first general manager. Mack reassures him, saying, "You are not too small—don't let them get away with that." He further references the wisdom of John Montgomery Ward, stating, "John M Ward said in his baseball book that all catchers between 5-4 and 6-4 would make good—so write Mr. Ehlers." These words highlight Mack's keen eye for talent and his determination to inspire confidence in the players of the next generation.
It’s always a great find to discover a handwritten letter from an early Hall of Fame inductee, especially one with such remarkable content and referencing an old time Hall of Fame icon like John Montgomery Ward. . Adding to its charm is the ornate letterhead Mack used, featuring multiple vignettes of famous contemporary hotels, as well as his exquisite 'old school' penmanship in classic fountain pen. The letter is further complemented by Mack’s perfectly legible full autograph and the inclusion of a self-addressed envelope, bearing the cancelled 3-cent stamp and West Palm Beach, Fla. postmark.
To round out this terrific piece, the letter comes professionally framed, ready for display, and includes a full Letter of Authenticity from JSA for added assurance. A remarkable piece of baseball history, it captures the wisdom and personal touch of one of the game’s most iconic figures, making it a must-have for collectors.
