A True Unicorn: 1969–70 Lew Alcindor Signed 8x10 Photograph, Rookie Year!
Presented here is a mythic treasure from the dawn of a basketball legend: an original team-issued 8x10 publicity photo from Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s 1969–70 rookie season, boldly signed “Lew Alcindor” in blue ballpoint ink. The autograph is graded PSA 9 Mint, an elite mark for a signature that is already exceptionally scarce.
The photo bears the printed rookie caption, “Lew Alcindor – 7’2” – Center – UCLA.” Jabbar didn’t use his changed name publicly until 1971—leaving collectors with only a tiny window (1 year) in which Alcindor signed this way as an NBA player. Authentic “Lew Alcindor” autographs from this rookie season are rare; and 8x10s are virtually unheard of. Most known examples appear only on programs, magazine pages, or small cuts.
What elevates this piece even further is its lack of personalization. Only a couple of Alcindor-signed photos have surfaced, and every one of them is dedicated to someone. This is likely the lone surviving rookie-year 8x10 signed without dedication—a true one-of-one rarity.
By season’s end, Alcindor was NBA Rookie of the Year; the next year, he delivered Milwaukee its first championship and fully embraced the name Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. He has never signed “Lew Alcindor” again.
A museum-grade relic from the briefest chapter of a Hall of Fame life—quite possibly the finest Lew Alcindor–signed 8x10 known to exist.
Comes with a PSA Letter of Authenticity
