The Finest "Three Finger Brown" on the Market!
Graded MINT 9 by PSA/DNA, this exceptional autograph represents the pinnacle of Mordecai Brown material currently available in the hobby. Boldly rendered in rich, jet-black fountain pen ink, the Hall of Fame pitcher inscribed “A Cub” beneath his impeccably scripted name - a coveted and meaningful addition that elevates the piece well beyond the ordinary.
The jumps right off the clean paper... In short, this is a top-of-the-line example in every respect:
Condition
Striking “old school” penmanship
Deep, unwavering ink
And the desirable Cubs inscription
Brown pitched 12 seasons for the Chicago Cubs between 1904 and 1912, later adding two more seasons to complete a 14-year major league career. He was instrumental in the championship campaigns of 1907 and 1908, when the Cubs were loaded with legends such as Joe Tinker, Johnny Evers, and Frank Chance — the famed “Tinker to Evers to Chance” trio.
Known throughout baseball history as “Three Finger Brown", he earned the nickname after losing his index finger on his right (throwing) hand in a childhood farm accident. The injury permanently altered the structure of his hand, causing the baseball to spin in an unusually deceptive fashion. The result was extraordinary movement - what today might be described as a knuckle-curve or even a change-up variation, baffling hitters and helping define one of the most dominant pitching runs of the Deadball Era.
His statistics are often overlooked - though they shouldn’t be!
Lifetime ERA of 2.06 over 14 seasons
1906 -1910, he never exceeded a 1.86 ERA
In 1909 alone: 50 appearances, 32 complete games, 27–9 record, and 342 innings pitched
Dominant numbers by any era’s standard.
He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1949, though sadly he had passed away the year before at age 71, never witnessing the honor bestowed upon him.
For the collector who demands the best available in the market, condition and rarity wise, this extraordinary example stands firmly at the top!
Authenticated, Encapsulated, and Graded Mint 9 by PSA/DNA. Accompanied by Letter of Authenticity from JSA as well!
