The Left Arm of God

Presented is an original 8 x 10⅛-inch Type I photograph capturing Sandy Koufax on the mound during Game 7 of the
1965 World Series, one of the defining performances of his legendary career. Taken from behind home plate, the image captures Koufax in his delivery during the decisive championship game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Minnesota Twins.

With the World Series tied at three games apiece, Koufax took the mound on just two days’ rest and delivered a performance for the ages. The Dodgers ace threw a complete-game shutout, allowing just three hits while striking out ten as Los Angeles defeated Minnesota 2-0 to capture the World Championship. Koufax was named World Series MVP after finishing the series with two complete-game shutouts, cementing the 1965 Fall Classic among the greatest chapters of his Hall of Fame career.

The performance served as the perfect conclusion to what can rightfully be considered one of the greatest seasons ever produced by a pitcher. Koufax was virtually untouchable throughout 1965, finishing 26-8 with a 2.04 ERA and a then-Major League record 382 strikeouts while capturing the pitching Triple Crown and his second unanimous Cy Young Award. He also threw his fourth career no-hitter that September — a perfect game against the Chicago Cubs. After a season of pure dominance, Koufax saved perhaps his greatest performance for last, taking the ball on two days’ rest and shutting out the Twins in Game 7 to bring a World Championship back to Los Angeles.

Adding tremendously to the significance of the piece is the reverse of the photograph, which retains its original United Press International markings and period documentation. Most notably, affixed to the reverse is a dated newspaper clipping identifying this very image as UPI’s Sports Photo of the Year — remarkable period recognition for an image that captured Koufax at the culmination of his historic 1965 season.

Far more than simply an original photograph of Sandy Koufax, this is an original news image from the decisive game of one of baseball’s greatest pitching seasons and performances — an image significant enough to be recognized in its own time as UPI’s Sports Photo of the Year.

Authenticated and encapsulated by PSA/DNA as an original Type I photograph — the hobby’s most desirable photographic classification, reserved for first-generation photographs developed from the original negative during the period in which the image was taken, generally within approximately two years. Unlike later reproductions or restrikes, Type I photographs represent the earliest original examples of an image and are particularly coveted by advanced collectors.
