An incredible piece of Major League Baseball history, offered here is a scarce 1938 Brooklyn Dodgers team-signed Yellow Night Game Experimental Baseball headlined by a gorgeous Babe Ruth signature right across the sweet spot! Ruth’s massive autograph is executed flawlessly in bold, black fountain ink and has been graded an impressive 8 by Grad Authentication.

Following his storybook playing career, The Great Bambino joined the Brooklyn Dodgers as a first-base coach in the summer of 1938. That August, under the direction of innovative Dodgers President Larry MacPhail, Brooklyn briefly experimented with yellow baseballs for night games, believing the brighter color would make the ball easier for players to see beneath the lights. The experiment lasted just a couple of games before the idea was abandoned, leaving remarkably few Official National League Yellow Night Game Baseballs behind. Importantly, these experimental balls were not standard baseballs later painted, coated, or shellacked yellow. Their distinctive color came from dye added to the leather during the manufacturing process, making each surviving example a genuine artifact of the experiment. Even unsigned examples are highly collectible and command significant prices today.

Ruth himself offered a characteristically simple assessment of the unusual baseballs when they debuted in 1938: “What’s the difference? They’re all round. I hit three over the fence in practice... I didn’t even know it was yellow until somebody fouled one down there by me. The color don’t make no difference. It’s the guy who who’s chucking ‘em at you that counts.”

A remarkable convergence of rarity, history, and provenance, this magnificent Babe Ruth autograph is firmly dated to the final chapter of his Hall of Fame career and preserved on one of the most elusive experimental baseballs of the era. With the Yellow Night Game experiment lasting only a matter of games, precious few signed examples could possibly have survived. Among those known, this example stands in a class of its own, distinguished by its extraordinary Ruth signature and surpassing even the Yellow Night Game Baseball exhibited at the National Baseball Hall of Fame, which does not bear Ruth’s autograph.
