Offered here is an exceptionally rare high school-era basketball signed by LeBron James, dating to approximately 2002, when the teenage phenom from Akron was already becoming one of the most talked-about athletes in the country. LeBron beautifully scripted his early-style signature in bold silver ink across the Rawlings NCAA rubber basketball, creating outstanding contrast and a fantastic display piece.

LeBron’s four years at St. Vincent-St. Mary produced one of the most decorated high school careers in basketball history. As a freshman, he led the Fighting Irish to a perfect 27-0 season and the first of three Ohio State Championships. As a sophomore, he captured a second straight State Championship while becoming the first sophomore ever named Ohio Mr. Basketball and the first sophomore selected to USA Today’s All-USA First Team. By his junior year, LeBron was the unquestioned #1 player in the country, repeating as Ohio Mr. Basketball and becoming the first junior ever named Gatorade National Player of the Year, while also earning USA Today and Parade National Player of the Year honors. Then, as a senior, he did it all again — winning Ohio Mr. Basketball for a third consecutive year, repeating as Gatorade, USA Today and Parade National Player of the Year, earning McDonald’s All-American honors and leading St. Vincent-St. Mary to its third State Championship in four years and a consensus National Championship.

Across his four-year varsity career, LeBron averaged approximately 25 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists per game, scoring more than 2,600 career points. By age 17, his games were attracting national television audiences and being moved into larger arenas to accommodate the crowds coming to see “The Kid from Akron.” In February 2002, Sports Illustrated famously put the high school junior on its cover and gave him the nickname that would follow him forever — “The Chosen One.”

Early, high school versions of LeBron’s autograph like this are extremely rare, with full-size single-signed basketballs particularly difficult to find. Despite the almost unimaginable expectations placed on him as a teenager — already being compared to Jordan, Magic, Bird and Kobe — no one could have known that LeBron would actually live up to the hype. More than two decades after becoming the #1 overall pick in the 2003 NBA Draft, LeBron has amassed 4x NBA Championships, 4x MVP Awards, 4x Finals MVP Awards and became the NBA’s All-Time Leading Scorer — just to name a few of his accomplishments and records.
