Tinker to Evers to a Young Baseball Fan!

A scarce dual-signed note featuring two members of the Chicago Cubs’ famed “Tinker to Evers to Chance” double-play combination. Signed by both Johnny Evers and Joe Tinker, this April 1, 1936 handwritten note represents one of the more elusive Hall of Fame pairings from baseball’s early era.

Inscribed in Evers’ hand, the note reads: “To our little Pittsburg baseball fan Jimmy Kehr, sincerely yours, John J. Johnny Evers.” This expanded signature format is particularly noteworthy, as Evers most commonly signed simply “John J. Evers,” making the inclusion of “Johnny” highly unusual compared to standard examples found in the hobby. Beneath Evers’ signature appears Tinker’s, signed “Joe B. Tinker.” Both autographs and the lighthearted inscription are executed in bold black fountain ink, offering strong contrast and attractive presentation on the original paper.

Dual-signed material from Evers and Tinker is inherently scarce. Both men were elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1947 - members of just the eighth induction class - alongside longtime teammate Frank Chance. As the Cubs’ legendary double-play tandem, they anchored Chicago’s championship clubs that captured World Series titles in 1907 and 1908, and their partnership was immortalized in Franklin P. Adams’ 1910 poem, permanently embedding “Tinker to Evers to Chance” into baseball history.

Though renowned for their seamless coordination on the field, the two were known to have maintained a strained personal relationship - an intriguing contrast that has only added to the lore surrounding their legacy. Both died relatively young - Evers in 1947 at age 65 and Tinker in 1948 - well before autograph collecting became widespread, contributing to the limited supply of authentic signed material. As a result, original dual-signed examples such as this remain challenging to locate.

The uncommon Evers signature variation, paired with Tinker’s strong companion autograph and the enduring historical significance of the pairing, positions this note as a compelling example from one of baseball’s most celebrated infields.
