The Iron Horse!
Offered here is one of the most sought after tickets in the entire hobby - 1941 Lou Gehrig Memorial Game Full Ticket! Of course, Gehrig holds a special place in baseball lore. After carving out one of the finest career's in the history of Major League Baseball, Gehrig was forced to retire at the beginning of the 1939 season due to his battle with ALS. A few months later, the Yankees honored Gehrig by retiring his number 4 on July 4th, where he delivered his iconic "Luckiest Man on the Face of the Earth" speech. Gehrig sadly passed just two years after - and to honor their fallen captain, the Yankees held the Lou Gehrig Memorial Game on July 4th 1941.
Ticket stubs to this iconic event are scarce, but full tickets like the one offered here are almost unheard of! Graded EX-MT 6 by PSA, this is the second highest graded in a population of just 8 known!
The void stamps on the back of the ticket are due to the original game on July 4th being rained out (it was rescheduled as a double header just two days later. Instead of issuing new tickets for the rain check, the Yankees honored the original July 4th commemorative tickets with the iconic image of Gehrig on it. (THIS IS NOT A PROOF TICKET)
The ticket boasts great contrast, sharp corners, and crisp edges - perfect for the astute ticket collector!
This iconic game also saw Joe DiMaggio extend his hit streak to 48 consecutive games, on his way to setting the record of 56 games. And naturally, the Yankees would go on to defeat the Dodgers in the 1941 World Series.
In 2022, two other Gehrig Memorial Full tickets sold in auction for $19k and $14K... truly a scarce piece of baseball history!
