Vintage-1946 Ted Williams Autographed Wire Service Photograph. PSA Auto
Ted Williams penned a beautiful vintage autograph in black fountain pen on this original black and white Associated Press wire photo from July 20,1946.
It's an in-action image featuring a close play at home plate during the game between the St. Louis Browns and Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park.
The scene shows Teddy Ballgame signaling to Johnny Pesky (d.2012) to "hit the dirt" as he tries to score on a base hit by Dom Di Maggio. St. Louis catcher, Gus Mancuso (d.1984), is about to apply the tag, as home plate Umpire Joe Rue (d.1984) watches the play, ready to make the call.
Each of the four participants shown has boldly signed the glossy finish photograph, and each is a bold black fountain mint pen exemplar that stands out distinctly on the photo. This is a one-of-a-kind photo, measuring 10 x 8 inches and in flawless Mint condition.
It is rare indeed to come across such an early in-action photo that's signed at the time in vintage fountain pen ink. It's also unusual to find one that's signed by all the participants in the photo and is not personalized to someone. And lastly, to put it plainly, when was the last time you have seen a perfect, vintage Ted Williams autograph on a wire photograph? A rare occurrence indeed, and it stopped us in our tracks when we came upon it.
A perfect piece for your Ted Williams, or vintage photograph, collection. Once this one is sold, its lost to the hobby!
Comes with a PSA Letter of Authentication and the original invoice from 2007 when it first sold (for 3,495.00).
