Ol' Blue Eyes

Offered here is a striking MGM Studio Photograph of a young Frank Sinatra in 1944, captured at the dawn of his meteoric rise as America’s most mesmerizing new vocalist and screen presence. Measuring 8" x 1, this Type 1 Original Photo reflects the smooth, magnetic charm that defined Sinatra’s early Hollywood year - an image carefully crafted by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer as they positioned him as one of the era’s most bankable stars.

This very photograph would go on to be used for two notable international film-star card issues: the 1947 Turf Cigarettes Film Stars #16 and the 1947 Kwatta Film Stars #276. Its selection for these sets speaks to the strength and appeal of the portrait, as well as Sinatra’s growing stature on the world stage. Today, collectors of early Hollywood ephemera and premium Type I photography recognize this image as one of the most iconic representations of Sinatra’s wartime era persona. While entertainment cards do not yet command the same universal attention as sports cards, the collecting world increasingly values the original photographs from which these classic card images were created. In sports memorabilia, Type I photographs used for iconic rookie cards—Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Mickey Mantle, and others - regularly achieve six-figure prices at auction. It’s easy to appreciate the appeal of owning the original image behind a classic Frank Sinatra card.

We believe that high-quality images of American icons, particularly those of this nature, are often grossly overlooked and certainly undervalued. Early first-= generation photographs of significant figures will always hold appeal and be highly sought after by collectors. The soaring prices of Type 1 sports photos are a clear testament to this trend. We are confident that the same will happen with Type 1 images from American pop culture and history. These photos not only represent good, solid value but also serve as timeless, powerful images of iconic moments.

This photograph has been authenticated by PSA as a Type I Original Photo – a first generation photograph, developed from the original negative, during the period (within approximately two years of when the picture was taken). Because they are developed from the original negative, Type I photographs offer exceptional clarity and are also exceedingly rare. Often, there are only a few known examples in existence, and sometimes, one of a kind.
