Roberto Clemente passed away tragically in 1972 in a plane crash at the age of just 38, but he had an extraordinary career, establishing himself as one of baseball's all-time greats. Over 18 seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates (1955-1972), Clemente earned 12 Gold Glove Awards for his exceptional fielding and powerful arm, and collected 3,000 hits. He led the Pirates to two World Series titles, with his standout performance in the 1971 World Series earning him the World Series MVP.
Winner of the 1966 N.L. MVP award, Roberto Clemente’s career was defined by his remarkable consistency and all-around excellence. He claimed four batting titles and had 13 seasons where he hit .300 or better, finishing with a .317 career batting average. Clemente was also a master of extra-base hits, finishing with an incredible 166 triples, second only to Stan Musial for modern day players, who hit just one more. What truly sets him apart, though, is his dominance in the outfield. He led the league in assists seven times, with several seasons of 20 or more assists, including remarkable totals of 27, 26, 22, and 22. In today’s game, it's almost unthinkable for an outfielder to achieve double-digit assists, let alone break 20 - Clemente’s numbers remain unparalleled in the modern era.
Needless to say, Roberto Clemente's autographs are rare and highly sought after by collectors in the hobby. This particular example is a beauty - immaculate and perfectly preserved. It will undoubtedly be a prized addition to any advanced collection, representing not only Clemente’s legendary career but also his lasting impact on the sport and culture.
