President Lincoln Approves the Recommendation of the U.S. Medical Inspector General
On January 9, 1863 President Lincoln received this one-page recommendation for Dr. Frank Hastings Hamilton (1813-1886) to become the Medical Inspector General of the United States during the Civil War. The letter of recommendation was sent to the Present on January 9, 1863 by four of the most respected surgeons at the time - Dr. Valentine Mott, Dr. Willard Parker, Dr. Alfred C. Post, Dr. James Wood, and Dr. Stephen Smith. On January 21, 1863 the President signed the handwritten request and forwarded it to the Secretary of War Edwin Stanton for approval.
In his hand, Lincoln has beautifully penned "Submitted to the Sec. of War. January 21, 1863” and included his flawless signature in bold black ink. The President’s writing and signature are impeccable… We could not ask for better!
We professionally double matted and framed this important historic item under ultraviolet protected plexiglass and have opened the reverse of the frame to show both sides. The Lincoln side, of course, is front and center, along with a befitting portrait of our 16th President.
We love these important pieces of history from the Civil War and feel every advanced collection should include a Lincoln autographed piece. This one is in outstanding condition as well!
Comes with a Letter of Authenticity from JSA .
About Doctor Frank H. Hamilton:
One of the prominent physicians of his time, Dr. Hamilton graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School and served as a medical professor at a number of schools before settling at the N.Y.U. Bellevue Hospital. He also served as Brigade Surgeon at the 1861 Battle of Bull Run and soon received his appointment of Lieutenant Colonel. By early 1863, he received his Medical Inspector General appointment.
Of interesting note, in 1881 when President James Garfield was shot by an assassin, his wife telegraphed Dr. Hamilton and sent a special train for him to attend to the President's injury. He stayed at Garfield's bedside until his passing.
