Offered here is an exceptional 1934 Tour of Japan team-signed baseball, headlined by Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig and featuring 18 total signatures from the legendary American All-Star touring party. Assembled with some of the greatest talent the game had ever seen, the team traveled across Japan playing a series of exhibition games against the country’s top players, with Ruth and Gehrig – already the most famous athletes in the world – serving as the unquestioned star attraction.
The historic tour became one of the most important chapters in the international growth of baseball. The American stars were greeted by enormous crowds throughout Japan, helping further ignite the country’s passion for the game and strengthen a baseball culture that continues to thrive nearly a century later. Today, Japan stands as one of the world’s great baseball nations, producing generations of Major League stars and modern-day icons such as Shohei Ohtani, whose unprecedented combination of hitting and pitching has naturally drawn comparisons to Ruth himself.
Among the most fascinating members of the touring party was Moe Berg, a career backup catcher whose greatest contributions came off the field. A Princeton graduate, Columbia Law School alumnus and gifted linguist, Berg used the 1934 trip to secretly photograph and gather information on Japan. He would later serve the United States as an intelligence operative during World War II, making him one of the most remarkable figures ever to wear a Major League uniform.
The ball features 18 total signatures, headlined by Ruth and Gehrig, along with fellow Hall of Famers Jimmie Foxx, Charlie Gehringer, Lefty Gomez and legendary manager Connie Mack. The remaining signatures include Moe Berg, Lefty O'Doul, Bing Miller, Eric McNair, Frankie Hayes, Clint Brown, Earl Whitehill, Rabbit Warstler, Joe Cascarella, Bob Schroeder, trainer Doc Ebling and pitching coach Jack Quinn.
Even more fittingly, the signatures appear on an Official Shogaku Japanese Baseball, giving the piece a direct connection to the country and historic tour it represents. The baseball remains in excellent overall condition, with strong period black steel-tip fountain pen signatures throughout.
Few baseballs bring together this level of star power and historical significance – Ruth, Gehrig, six Hall of Famers, the rise of baseball in Japan and even a remarkable chapter of pre-World War II espionage, all represented on a single baseball!
