1882 Standard Oil Trust Stock Certificate, signed by John D. Rockefeller as President and Henry Flagler as Secretary
John D. Rockefeller and Henry Flagler joined forces to found an oil refining company in Cleveland in 1865. This company would eventually become Standard Oil Company in 1870 and, in 1882, Standard Oil Company and its affiliates combined to form Standard Oil Trust. The present certificate is, therefore, an early iteration of the company’s stock. In 1885 the company officially relocated its headquarters to New York City, where it flourished until 1911, when it was broken up in accordance with President Theodore Roosevelt's newly-passed antitrust laws.
This original stock certificate represents 100 shares at $100 each (equaling $10,000). Adjusted for inflation, that's about $300k today! The certificate (no. A1192) is made out to William V. Brokaw, founder of Brokaw Brothers, a prominent clothing company in New York City, and yes, clearly a wealthy individual at this time.
The condition of the original document itself is outstanding. The certificate is clean and free of any detracting marks while the printing (including text and vignettes) is bold and clear. The autograph itself is strong and still jet-black. Typically the autographs will turn to brown over time, but this one example is as good as we've seen.
The autograph is a great piece of history.
